SabiNano (Pty) Ltd (SabiNano) is a privately owned South African nanotechnology company that manufactures and supplies carbon-based nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene and biomaterial-based technologies for research and development and industrial applications. The Directors and team of SabiNano boast of extensive expertise and professional knowledge in the development of water treatment technologies /materials /chemicals, manufacturing of carbon nanomaterials (e.g. multiwalled CNTs, nitrogen-doped CNTs, carbon spheres, graphene oxide) and diverse forms of nanostructured materials (e.g. nanocellulose) with wide range of dimensions (shapes and sizes).

SabiNano manufactures and supplies high quality carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at a commercial scale. Our multiwalled carbon nanotubes (SabinanoTubesTM) have purities ranging between 90% (industrial grade) and >98% (research grade) depending on customer needs and the end use of the materials.

SabiNano (Pty) Ltd is one of the few companies in South Africa that owns the all-new Masterwave BTR benchtop reactor. The reactor, for the first time is transferring the microwave synthesis to the kilolab. Lab productivity of up to kilogram amounts per day is made possible. The benchtop reactor’s magnetically driven paddle stirrer provides independent stirring regimes for individual content. Due to its rising-sensor temperature measurement technique, Masterwave BTR features the high temperature accuracy required for direct method transfer from any smaller microwave device. This upscale synthesis microwave can now be booked for utilization by both industry and academic researchers. Dr. Sabelo Mhlanga

Chief Executive Officer

Sabelo Mhlanga is the Founder and CEO of SabiNano (Pty) Ltd since 1 June 2018, a company he founded in 2008 with one of the company directors. He holds a Ph.D in Chemistry with focus on carbon nanomaterials from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits, 2006) and a certificate in Management of Technology and Innovation (Wits, 2010) amongst other qualifications. He spent many years working as a university lecturer and researcher from 2010 (Wits) until he was appointed a full Professor (2015, UNISA) during which he occupied several positions as a Director/Deputy Director of various portfolios. He has published over 100 peer reviewed research outputs including papers, reviews, book chapters, technical reports, and conference proceedings. He has trained and supervised masters (15), doctoral (6) and post-doctoral (6) fellows with a focus area of nanotechnology and the water-energy-food nexus, who have graduated or completed their research since 2010. He is the CEO/Managing Director of SabiNano responsible for setting-up the company from being a start-up to becoming a full-scale commercial company. He oversees the day-to-day activities of the company at its head-office in Randburg, Johannesburg.


Boitumelo Makgabutlane, MTech


Boitumelo Makgabutlane obtained her MTech degree at the University of South Africa (UNISA), focused on material synthesis and application for environmental remediation. She also has a Science Communication qualification from Stellenbosch University. She worked at the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) as a science communicator in 2018, and in February 2019, she was appointed as a Production Scientist at SabiNano (Pty) Ltd. She is currently responsible for research & development and production of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and other carbon-based materials using greener approaches for application in the water-energy-food nexus and industrial applications such lightweight strong composites for construction and civil engineering applications, automobile manufacturing, energy storage, etc.


Advisors

Professor Neil Coville, PhD

Neil Coville obtained his B.Sc. (Hons) and M.Sc. degrees at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), Johannesburg, before proceeding to McGill University, Montreal in 1968 where he obtained his Ph.D degree (1973). After post-doctoral work at Harvard University he returned to Wits in 1976. He worked his way through the ranks in the School of Chemistry, from lecturer to Chair of Inorganic Chemistry before becoming an Emeritus Professor. He is still a member of two DST-NRF Centres of Excellence (Catalysis; Strong Materials) and maintains an active research group. His research work is focussed on carbon chemistry – synthesis and applications - and this has led to many studies on the shaping and doping of carbons. The applications include the use of the carbons as catalysts supports (e.g. in Fischer-Tropsch catalysis) and for use in sensors and solar cells.



Dr Manfred Scriba, PhD

Manfred Scriba holds a Ph.D in Experimental Physics from the University of Cape Town on the Synthesis and characterization of doped silicon nanoparticles. He is the manager of the DST-CSIR Nanomaterial Industrial Development Program at the DST-CSIR Nanotechnology Innovation Centre and leads a team of researchers and engineers that develop nanomaterials and nanocomposites and also support the industry to develop and scale up processes in nanomaterials. He has managed diverse teams in his career including: electronics and optics development, image processing, special camera development and materials development. He has himself and through these groups, developed and commercialised a number of products and filed more than 8 patents. In addition, he has authored and co-authored more than 14 papers. For 2 years he assisted with the business development of the Lasers group of CSIR, which was a good learning for the rest of his career. In addition, as co-founder and chair of the SA Nanotechnology Initiative he was responsible for the development of the nanotechnology strategy of SA and its implementation. Recently the DST appointed him as national champion for the proposal and establishments of a Nano-Micro Manufacturing Facility which forms part of their SA Infrastructure Roadmap. At CSIR he is presently setting up facilities to support this DST programme and at the same time assists many groups with business plan development and strategy.
